Narendra Modi was on Thursday unanimously elected leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislature party in Gujarat, paving the way for him to become the new chief minister of the state, replacing Keshubhai Patel. The new chief minister will be sworn-in at a public function on Sunday at the helipad grounds in Gandhinagar.
Modi`s name was proposed by outgoing chief minister Keshubhai Patel and seconded by industries minister Suresh Mehta at the BJP legislature party meeting, which began in Gandhinagar at 1030 hours.

The decision had informally been taken on Wednesday after former BJP president Khushabhau Thakre and vice president Madan Lal Khurana held consultations with Gujarat leaders. Bureau Report
