A sister cities convention here was expected to attract 80 Chinese delegates, but 32 have cancelled.
At least 66 people worldwide have died from the mysterious pneumonia virus sudden acute respiratory syndrome which may have begun in China.
The Hongi ceremony of pressing noses sees the type of close physical contact the health ministry says is responsible for transmitting the virus.
Director of public health Colin Tukuitonga, said performing Hongi would not be wise because delegates could come from affected areas.
"I would discuss with Maori people in Wairarapa and suggest in a sensible way that this practice is suspended because we're not sure of the risks.
