July 30: If you are the kinds who believe in holidaying in style...then all roads lead to Rome. A city seeped in history and romance coupled with a thriving nightlife and scrumptious cuisine...Enough to make your holiday a truly memorable experience. Rome is halfway down Italy`s western coast, about 20km inland. Most of the major sights are within a reasonable distance of the central railway station, Stazione Termini.
The thing that catches your eye almost instantaneously about the city is its fascinating, omnipresent architecture, whether it is the Christian basilicas and Romanesque churches or the medieval bell towers or Renaissance palaces. History is written on every wall...Every street has a timeless story to tell. Wherever you turn your head, there is an architecture marvel greeting you. There are many sights worth visiting such as St Peter`s, Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, and Castello Sant Angelo.
Then there are of the city’s classical features, most visibly the Colosseum, and the Forum and Palatine Hill; but from here there’s an almost uninterrupted sequence of monuments that will keep you on your toes through your stay.
All of which is not to say that Rome is an easy place to absorb on one visit; you need to approach things slowly, even if you only have a few days here. There is no point planning your itinerary while in Rome...Just venture out and let the city’s magnificent sights surprise you. Most of the city’s sights can be approached from a variety of directions, and it’s part of the city’s allure to stumble across things by accident. In any case, it’s hard to get anywhere very fast because of winding old streets and traffic congestions. And while you are out, don’t forget to hang out in one of the city’s marvellous collection of piazzas.
And when you don’t want to walk or explore any more. Just sit back, order a cup of steaming latte and take in the city’s life pass you by. Its atmosphere is like no other city – a monumental, busy capital and yet an appealingly relaxed place. Bureau Report
