Melbourne, Feb 09: Ernie Els wns Heineken Classic by one shot from Adam Scott.
South Africa's Ernie Els blew an eight-shot lead but clawed back to win the Heineken Classic by one stroke after a gripping head-to-head battle with Australian Adam Scott at Royal Melbourne Golf Club on Sunday (February 8). World number three Els -- who started the day with a seemingly insurmountable eight-shot lead -- carded a two-over-par 74 for a total of 268, 20-under-par, one shot ahead of Scott who shot 67. Els, who shot a record 12-under-par 60 in the first round on Thursday (February 5), had a disastrous outward nine holes of six-over 42, including four bogeys and a triple-bogey seven at the 412-yard fourth hole. His escape from the sand at the 4th rolled through the front of the green before his fourth shot, a chip back on to the green, rolled back down to his feet, from where he chipped and two-putted for a seven.
