Kochi, July 13: A new boat building yard, capable of building boats of international standards, is to be set up here by the Kerala State Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC), the state transport minister R Balakrishna Pillai today said. Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the permanent building complex of the KSINC here, Pillai said that negotiations were on with some foreign firms on the technology transfer for the boat yard, which would also facilitate to build boats for navy and coast guard.

KSINC was also foraying into coastal shipping services and operation of tourist boats, he said.
A coastal shipping service will be launched in three months which would connect Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode, Pillai said, adding that the plan would cover the entire distance in seven hours.

KSINC has planned to operate tourist boats in the backwaters of Kochi, Kollam and Alapuzha. Initially, the corporation will hire boats for the service.

Replying to a query on the Kochi Skybus Project, he said the Metro Rail Project was not suitable for Kochi and hence the Sky Bus Project was being preferred. At present the project was before the urban development ministry and after getting sanction from the union government, the work on the project can start in next two months, he said.
Former minister and MLA K B Ganesh was also present on the occasion.
