Dhaka, Aug 05: Bangladesh cabinet has approved the commencement of Dhaka-Agartala bus service which is likely to
be commissioned by mid-September.
The service is likely to commence from mid-September following signing of some agreements on details by communications ministers of the two countries, a media report quoting communications minister Nazmul Huda, said.
A cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Khaleeda Zia gave the go-ahead yesterday for the service. The meet, however, "kept the option to fix a date for the commissioning of the bus service open," it said.
An Indian external affairs ministry spokesman had said in New Delhi last week that "there are procedural hitches from the Bangladesh side and these are in the process of being sorted out."
India and Bangladesh had agreed to start a second bus service between Dhaka and Agartala during the foreign minister level meeting here on July 15 and 16 and New Delhi had even agreed to the proposal by Dhaka that Bangladeshi communication minister would travel to Agartala to flag off the service. Private news agency UNB quoted Huda as saying that the communications ministries of the two countries would now sign an "instrument" dealing various matters including the date of operation, number of buses to be plied, ticket fare and place of stoppage", adding "some petty matters need to be taken care before the service starts”.
The first bus service between Bangladesh and India began in June 1999 when Dhaka-Kolkata direct service was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee when he visited the country.
