Bangalore, July 13: A day after quitting the Union Cabinet to concentrate on his party job, BJP's new Karnataka unit chief Ananth Kumar today resolved to build the party as an alternative to congress in the state and asserted that BJP was fully prepared to face both parliamentary and assembly elections.
"After being relieved from ministerial duties, my single point programme henceforth will be to build BJP as an alternative to Congress in Karnataka," Kumar told reporters.
In the event of the ruling Congress preferring early assembly polls in Karnataka, BJP was ready to face them, Kumar said.
He was apparently reacting to KPCC president B Janardhan Poojary's statement that his party would go for assembly polls along with general elections if they were advanced by the BJP.
Kumar, however, said BJP chief Venkaiah Naidu at the recent 'chintan baitak' in Mumbai has dismissed speculations about the country going to mid-term poll early next year and declared that Lok Sabha elections would be held in 2004 as scheduled.
He said in the last 17 days after assuming charge as the state unit party president, he has toured ten districts and claimed that the partymen were "electrified".
Outlining his contribution to the state's development during his five-year tenure as Union minister, Kumar claimed that he was instrumental in securing clearance for increased height of the Alamatti dam, addition of 1600 kms of national highway and creation of new railway zone, besides bailing out the state in the Cauvery River water sharing dispute.
