New Delhi, July 20: Smelling a rat, the Delhi High Court has issued notices to Delhi government, Lt Governor and four others on a petition alleging a "scam" in the purchase of taxis for unemployed scheduled caste and scheduled tribe youths. Admitting the petition by 57 SC/ST youths, Justice B D Ahmad also issued notices to Delhi Scheduled Caste Financial & Development Corporation Ltd (DSF & DC Ltd), Rajiv Motors Ltd, Director Transport (Govt NCT of Delhi) and National Commission for Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes.
The court would hear the petition on October 15 next.
The petitioners, under the banner of Anusuchit Jaati Janjaati Ekta Sangthan, alleged that they were provided with "discarded" taxis even as loans were sanctioned and payments made for purchase of "new" ones under a scheme launched by the state government in 1995.
The ambassador cars, purchased for use as taxis, had major manufacturing defects in body, chassis, engine, clutch box and gear box, they alleged.
The petitioners counsel S C Juneja told the court the taxis had problems from day one as the certificate of registration of one of the cars showed the vehicle was already marked for "disposal".
According to Juneja, the petitioners were sanctioned a loan of Rs 2,80,000 each for the cars but were not allowed to have a vehicle of their own choice as the respondents bought them the same for a sum of Rs 2,59,765 each. Interestingly, at that time a new Maruti van was available at a reasonable price of Rs 1,80,000.
