Shillong, Aug 31: The Reserve Bank is contemplating introducing 10 rupee coin after witnessing the popularity of five rupee coin in the country. Disclosing this on Saturday, RBI Deputy Governor V Kameshan said 'preliminary work is going on' in this regard.
As a life of a coin is about 15 years as against a note's one-and-a-half year only, the RBI last year produced more five rupee coins than paper notes of the same denomination.

Kameshan, who was here in connection with a meeting with senior bank officials and government functionaries of the North Eastern Region, said the 'soilage' of notes was more frequent in the country's 'humid atmosphere'.
"But in the last two years, the RBI ran a systematic campaign to replace all old damaged notes," Kameshan said.
Referring to the issue of fake currency in the North Eastern Region, the RBI official said the problem needed to be addressed to with 'designing' and 'updating' of measures. Bureau Report
