According to a study conducted by University of Virginia researcher, Dr. Frederick Hayden, cold sufferers who took the drug Pleconaril recovered from the cold an average of one day faster than those who did not take the drug. Because the drug is taken orally, it is better able to attack the viral infected cells in the respiratory system. The medicine when taken within 24 hours of infection, helps reduce the virus`s ability to spread. Each year, as many as fifty million people experience the debilitating effects of the common cold. Pleconaril has not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in the U.S. Hayden and his team would like to see the the FDA approve the drug in time for next year`s cold season.
