Jammu, Aug 17: Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested a man for an attack last month on Hindu pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine that killed seven people and wounded more than 40.
A nearly three-week-long investigation into the July 21 grenade attack led the police to Mohammad Yusuf, a resident of a village in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district, about 100 km from here.
Police officials said Yusuf had admitted he carried out the attack at the behest of local Hizbul Mujahideen commanders. "It was the lure of big money that drove him to hurl grenades at pilgrims at Bangana, one of congested spots en route to the shrine," said a police official who did not want to be named.

Yusuf, who had gone into hiding after the attack, was arrested during a gun battle between security forces and militants in Basantgarh. He revealed his role in the attack on Hindu pilgrims when the police questioned him, the official said.Police are looking for more clues and trying to ascertain whether militants had plans for more such attacks.
