New York City, Feb 19: Baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez officially joins the the New York Yankees.
Alex Rodriguez donned the famous New York Yankee pinstripes for the first time Tuesday (February 17 )when he was introduced to the media at a Yankee stadium news conference, the day after his major trade from the Texas Rangers was made official. Rodriguez will wear the number 13, because his favoured number -- three -- has been retired. It belonged to Babe Ruth. The Yankees have taken on the majority of the $179 million left on Rodriguez's $252 million, 10-year contract signed in 2000.
He won two Gold Gloves as shortstop and has made his name in that position in 10 Major League Baseball seasons with the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers.

New York-born Rodriguez, 28, said he and Yankee superstar Derek Jeter remained friends and have a good relationship, despite lingering doubts following previous comments he made about Jeter in Esquire magazine.

Rodriguez, who questioned Jeter's leadership qualities, told reporters on Tuesday that "time" had helped heal those wounds, and he had already enjoyed a long conversation with the Yankee icon about their future.

'A-Rod', a long-time friend to Jeter as well as a one-time rival, said he had no problem switching from shortstop to third base so that Jeter, the Yankee captain, could remain in his customary position for the Bronx Bombers.

Yankees manager Joe Torre, who has guided the Yankees to eight successive postseasons, is under increasing pressure to add to the club's 26 World Series titles.

They have not won a championship ring since 2000 but, with Rodriguez, now boast a payroll of around $190 million and some of the best current players in the game.
