New Delhi, Aug 08: The mortal remains of deputy commandant BSF Satish Chandra Menon, who laid down his life while serving in Kosovo on a UN peace mission, were consigned to flames here today with full force honours. Director General BSF Ajay Raj Sharma, along with other senior officials, attended the cremation of Menon, who is survived by wife and two children.

"Menon was an excellent officer and served in several difficult and challenging border areas", additional DG BSF A K Mitra said while lauding Menon's achievements in counter insurgency operations.

Menon, 43, hailing from Kerala, was killed in a sniper attack on Sunday night while travelling in a UN police car towards Mitrovica. A British officer driving the car escaped unhurt, U N Subramani, a fellow officer with Menon, said. He was the first police officer to be killed since the mission was established four years ago.

BSF has announced a compensation of around Rs 32.5 lakh to the kin of the deceased in addition to Rs 25 lakh granted by United Nations, Mitra said.

The UN mission, called UNMIK, was established to provide interim civil administration under which people of the province, ravaged by ethnic war between Serbs and Albanians, could enjoy substantial autonomy.
