Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged heavy machine gun fire across the border on Tuesday, Army sources said.
A BSF officer and a policeman were injured when Pakistani troops fired at Indian positions along the international border in the Jammu sector of Kashmir, the sources said. The firing came as Pakistan marked its 54th Independence Day, with India set to follow suit on Wednesday. The two countries gained their independence from Britain with the partition of the sub-continent in 1947.
"The fire was returned and the exchange of fire is continuing along a 10-kilometer stretch," said one Army official, who could not confirm any casualties on the Pakistani side. Bureau Report
