Redmond (US), May 24: Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer confirmed that he is selling some of his holdings in the software giant.
In a statement, Ballmer said that the move is aimed at gaining some diversification of his financial assets.
As of September 9 last year, Ballmer owned 470.9 million shares in the company.
In recent weeks, Microsoft shares have bucked the broader upward market trend and have fallen to 24.16 as of Thursday closing bell from 26.35 on May 9.
"Even though this is a personal financial matter, I want to be clear about this to avoid any confusion," Ballmer said.
"I remain excited about the potential for our technology to change people's lives, and I remain as committed to Microsoft as ever," he said.
Microsoft spokeswoman Rachel Wayne said that Ballmer will disclose the number of shares he has sold in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
