Chandigarh, Aug 04: Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, O P Verma today called upon the NGOs and corporate sector to come forward in supporting and supplementing the efforts of government for rehabilitating and launching welfare schemes for war heroes, especially those who had been wounded in action.
Speaking after the launch of the foundation, Verma said that government had taken many steps for the welfare and rehabilitation of army's war wounded personnel.
Verma said that government initiatives got momentum after the 1971 war and especially after the Kargil war of 1999.
He said that however, such measures fell considerably short of what was required to meet the aspirations of those soldiers wounded in war.
"No country can repay the sacrifice and gallantry of the sterling personnel of the army. The shortfall, between what the governments, both central and state, provide and the requirements and aspirations of the war wounded, needs to be met by the citizens of the country, through non-governmental organisations (NGOs)", Verma commented.
