Sam Smith feels being racist in 2016 is 'ridiculous'

Washington: After suffering a backlash over his recent Twitter post, Sam Smithtook to the social media to defend himself.

The 23-year-old singer wrote on his Instagram page, "For the record, I was merely sharing an experience I had in the hope it would draw attention to how ridiculous it is to be racist in 2016", E! Online reports.

The 'Stay With Me' hit-maker added this was not about him anyway. It was a deep rooted issue that exists in the society and that should be now extinct.

His post further read as, "Having been bullied my whole life for being gay, what I do know is that it is wrong and completely unacceptable. Here's to people being allowed to be people."

Earlier, Smith was criticised for writing, "Just experienced my friend getting verbally abused racially in London. I am absolutely SPEECHLESS. I never ever ever ever thought that would happen here. Absolutely speechless and hurt. I feel like I have to shine some sort of light on it.

It added, "The police were so unhelpful in the situation, and it's deeply shocked me. Humans are HUMANS."

Fellow users were quick to ridicule the star's dismay, with one 'fan' accusing him of 'whitesplaining', while another said he needs "a reality check."
