Multan, July 19: A Pakistani paramilitary ranger was killed and four others were wounded today when their vehicle ran over a land mine in southern Pakistan, a senior police official said. The incident occurred in the town of Bakhshapur, 400 km southwest of Multan, where suspected robbers have allegedly planted land mines to keep police and rangers away, regional police chief Syed Sahib Shah told the Associated Press.

No other details were immediately available.

Shah said that the wounded men were taken to a nearby military hospital where they were listed in stable condition.
“We are looking for the people who had planted these land mines,'' he said.

Attacks on Pakistan's paramilitary rangers and police by robbers and tribesmen are common in rural and tribal regions, where the federal government has limited control and access.
