The Bahujan Samaj Party on Tuesday said that it would support the Centre in its action against terrorism, provided the same were carried out without an eye on petty political gains. “The BSP is all for dealing terrorism sternly and would back the government if it takes strong action to deal with the evil and does not use this opportunity for political gains,” party's national vice president Mayawati told reporters in Lucknow.
“Demanding an all-party meeting to prepare a strategy for dealing with the menace of terrorism in the aftermath of the December 13 attack on Parliament house in New Delhi,” she said, adding, “The central leadership should refrain from rhetoric, as its tall claims would only make the terrorists more alert, and dealing with them would become tougher.” She said, “The December 13 attack has shown that the government has learnt nothing from the Kargil episode, which was also a result of security lapse caused by intelligence failure.”
However, Mayawati maintained that there was no need for POTO to deal with the situation, as the existing laws were sufficient, though she conceded that certain amendments could be made in the existing laws to make them more stringent. Buoyed by her party's 'Maharally' held in Lucknow on December 15, she claimed that the BSP would emerge as the single largest party in the forthcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and reiterated that it would go to the polls alone.
