New Delhi, June 05: A meeting of the cabinet and the cabinet committee on WTO will be held here today to take up among other things a decision on the future of public sector Pyrites, Phosphates and Chemicals Limited and India's offer for opening certain services to international competition. Sources said the cabinet will also take up issues related to Greater Nile Oil Project (GNOP) where Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) recently acquired 25 per cent stake after buying out equity from talisman of Canada.
PPCL was set up in 1960 for exploring and exploiting mineral deposits for production of sulphur, sulphuric acid and phosphatic fertilisers. The PSU consistently ran deficits from 1993 to 2000 accumulating losses worth Rs 250 crore before posting a profit of Rs 108 crore in 2001.
It runs three production units in Bihar and Rajasthan and operates rock phopshate mines in Dehradun. On the cabinet committee on WTO, sources said it would be "offer meetings" to discuss opening of the health, architecture, tourism , book keeping accountancy and financial services to foreign players.
