June 11: For 82 years Italian design company Alessi have livened up everyday objects, revitalizing our everyday lives with their hip household products. From the simplistic glass and table wear and playful plastic strainers, containers and corkscrews, to the coolly sophisticated coffee makers and stainless steel bowls, Alessi's aesthetic adds a fashionable flair to any abode. Always ahead of the game, they have consistently collaborated with other design greats, including Philippe Starck, Michael Graves, Marc Newson, Frank Gehry and Massimo Morozzi, long before others got their hands on them, expanding their collections and design culture. Their latest alliances produced a new Alessi watch collection, composed of four lines, all state of the art design and all under $200. Israeli architect Ron Arad designed the 'Look No Hands' watch, a sleek, minimal face which itself rotates instead of the hands to show the time. Graphic artist and interior designer Stefano Pirovano designed 2 of the lines, a sophisticated sculpted aluminum number with a suede strap called the 'Callisto' and the colorful 'Calumet' with one mould case and strap in rubber and a concave crystal face. Lastly, new to the Alessi fold and known for his penchant for minimalism, Piero Lissoni created the clean cut 'Tic,' available in three versions all with square dial and stainless steel band. The watches are available now at the MoMa Store in Soho and were launched in conjunction with an Alessi retrospective.
