Kochi, Nov 13: A passenger shipping service, between Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram and Colombo, is likely to start from December 01. While the golden cruiser lines will be operating the service, the state-owned Kerala shipping Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC) will be arranging the ground support for the service, including immigration and baggage clearance etc, KSINC sources here said.

A Memorandum of Understanding in this regard was signed last week between KSINC managing director, K N Satheesh and golden cruiser lines proprietor, Felix. The vessel, which has been selected for the service is presently undergoing dry dock repairs at Philippines and is likely to reach Vizhinjam by November 28.

The 500 passenger capacity vessel will have a duty free shop and restaurant. It will operate thrice a week from Vizhinjam and take six hours to cover the distance between the two ports. The up and down fares for ordinary class are around 85 US dollars, while the upper class fares have yet to be fixed. On the proposed shipping service between Kochi-Gulf ports, the sources said the corporation had identified a Gulf-based operator for the service and negotiations would soon begin. The plan was to operate the service on a joint-venture basis.
