Putrajaya (Malaysia), Oct 14: United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan has cancelled a visit to Malaysia to attend an Islamic summit, a UN official said today. "We received a fax saying the trip is cancelled," said the official on condition of anonymity. "No reasons were given why the trip was put off," he said.
Annan was due to arrive in Malaysia tomorrow for a summit of the 57-member Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC). On Saturday the UN announced that Annan had cancelled a visit to India from October 12 to 14.
"The trip has been put off as Annan is very busy with issues pertaining to the evolving situation in Iraq," a UN official said then. Annan was to visit India on his way to the OIC summit, which opens Thursday in Malaysia's new administrative capital of Putrajaya, south of Kuala Lumpur. Bureau Report
