Yangon, Sept 22: Indonesian envoy Ali Alatas met with Myanmar's Prime Minister General Khin Nyunt today, officials said, as he launched a mission to secure the release of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Alatas, a former foreign minister, met with Khin Nyunt at military headquarters for an hour and presented him with an official letter from Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri, an official source told newspersons.

No further details of the meeting were disclosed, but it is considered a key point in the visit by the envoy who flew into Yangon on Sunday and is expected to stay at least four days.

Myanmar's junta has revealed few details of Alatas's trip and ordered the media out of the Yangon hotel where he is staying. The envoy said on Sunday he would release a statement after he met with Myanmar officials.
His mission comes ahead of next month's summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) in Bali at which Khin Nyunt will be representing the military state.

Indonesia, the current chairman of Asean, has urged the Yangon regime to release Aung San Suu Kyi before the meeting. In June Asean announced it would send a delegation to Myanmar with the hope of meeting the democracy campaigner.

On Wednesday Alatas, Indonesia's best-known diplomat, said he had been named Megawati's special envoy to Myanmar to negotiate the release of Aung San Suu Kyi who was taken into detention on May 30.
