Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat discussed with Jordan's king Abdullah II on Sunday the possibility of convening an emergency Arab Summit to bolster support for the Palestinians.
An official statement at the end of the talks said both leaders discussed steps which could be taken on the Arab and international fronts to end the suffering of the Palestinian people and to confront the Israeli threats. It did not refer to Arafat's quest for an emergency Arab summit.
Jordanian officials, however, said Arafat made the request in a one-hour meeting with Abdullah, whose country chairs the rotating presidency of Arab league summits. The officials, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity, declined to provide other details.
