Moscow, June 06: A top Russian defence industry official was shot dead this morning in front of his residential apartment block in downtown Moscow. Igor Klimov, acting director-general of state-owned Almaz-Antei corporation, producing air and space defence weapons systems, was shot dead by a revolver with a silencer by an unidentified killer, state-run Rossia TV channel reported.

A scuffle preceded with the killer before Klimov died of a gunshot wound in the chest, a police spokeswoman told the channel. She did not rule out the probability of the killer trying to snatch Klimov's bag with documents.

Almaz-Antei Corporation was formed in 2002 under a presidential decree.

It is Russia's biggest designer and manufacturer of air and space defence weapons, including air defence complexes based on Patriot Class S-300 medium-range surface-to-air anti-missile systems, BUK-M1-2, TOR- M1 and Pechora short range surface-to-air missiles.

The authorities have launched investigations into Klimov's murder at the highest level.
