Mumbai, Oct 28: A special court would today hear the bail plea of Iqbal Kaskar, younger brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, held under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act in a land grabbing case.
This is for the first time Iqbal has sought liberty from the special court since his arrest on March 19. He is confined in central prison.
Iqbal's bail plea would be argued by his lawyer Sham Keswani in the court of designated Judge A P Bhangale. The court will hear the prosecution before giving its verdict.
Iqbal pleaded that the police had not made out any case against him and urged for bail on the ground that MCOCA was not applicable to him.
Meanwhile, the court has remanded him and two others to judicial custody till today. If Iqbal's bail plea is rejected, his custody would be extended.
Iqbal was arrested under MCOCA after he was deported from Dubai. He is facing the charges of channelising funds of the underworld into the real estate in Mumbai.
Iqbal and his associates had developed Sara Business Centre and Sahara Shopping Complex near the police commisionerate in south Mumbai allegedly with underworld money. These shopping complexes were illegal and have been attached by the court in an interim measure.
According to police, Dawood had pumped a lot of money into the real estate here by purchasing old buildings and converting them into multiplexes.
Dawood and his brothers, Noora, Mushtaqeen and Anees are still absconding.
