Jammu, Sept 05: Militants stepped up their activities in Jammu and Kashmir following the killing of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) operational chief Ghazi Baba on August 30, but security forces retaliated strongly, killing 33 ultras in the last few days, defence sources said here today. Since August 31, 14 major militancy-related incidents took place, including two Fidayeen strikes, encounters, explosions and killings claiming the lives of 56 people, including 33 militants, 16 civilians and seven securitymen, the sources said.

"While 20 militants were killed in Kashmir, 13 other were killed in Jammu even as militants intensified their activities after Ghazi Baba's killing during last four days," the sources told newspersons. Ghazi Baba, who masterminded the attack on Parliament House nearly two years ago, was killed in an encounter with security forces in Noorbagh area of Srinagar.

Since the killing, militants launched two fidayeen attacks, one on the BSF headquarters at Nishat, Srinagar and another at an army camp near Kansar. Three Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militants and a woman were killed in the incidents while six were injured.

Militants also slaughtered three members of a Gujjar family in Udhampur and five members of a BJP leader's family in Doda during the period while security forces in separate encounters killed JeM sector commander Abu Mehdi in Rajouri and five top commanders of JeM, LeT and Huji in Hill Kaka.
