Noida, May 13: The groom reached the marriage pandal in striking attire, complete with the traditional sword and the safa. The shy bride awaited the betrothal. The groom demanded a price, but the bride told the police. The groom is now cooling his heels behind bars, dressed as a dulha although a little worse for the wear.

This marriage ceremony in question was being solemnised at a community centre in Noida's Sector 24. The 26-year-old bride called the police control room before the marriage could be solemnised. The groom, the cynosure of all eyes before the ceremony took a different turn, was beaten black and blue. His clothes were torn in the rain of blows he received.
The bride to be, Nisha Sharma, in her complaint to the Noida Police alleged that she was insulted by the groom and she would never accept him as her husband as he was too greedy. Acting on her complaint, the Noida Police arrested the groom for demanding dowry.
According to the bride's family, the marriage party reached Noida to solemnise the marriage of Manish Dalal, a Jat, with Nisha, a Brahmin. The groom and his mother, Vidya Dalal, a resident of House No 188, GG-1, Vikaspuri Delhi, demanded cash of Rs 12 lakh before the sindoor-daan ceremony was performed. Taken aback by the demand of dowry, the father of the bride, D D Sharma, requested the groom and his mother to accept the Esteem car, refrigerator and a television he was already offering as gifts. However, the adamant mother-in-law to be did not listen to their plea and stalled the ceremony, demanding Rs 12 lakh in cash with the car first.
Enraged that her demands had not been met by the bride's family, the groom's mother spat on the bride's father even as shocked guests watched. All hell broke loose then. Suddenly, the music stopped as the family members of the bride took umbrage to the uncivilised behaviour of the groom's mother. The atmosphere turned tense after the groom taking a cue from his mother, slapped Mr D D Sharma, the bride's father.
The bride Nisha, witnessing from a distance the humiliation her father was being put through, came out charging. She declared her unwillingness to marry Manish Dalal. Then the plucky girl promptly informed the NOIDA Police control room, who acted swiftly and took the groom's family into custody. A case under section 498A of Indian Penal Code and 3/4 section of Dowry Prohibition Act has been registered at the Sector 24 police station after the bride's father formally lodged a complaint. Manish was arrested from his residence at Vikaspuri in West Delhi. His mother Vidya Dalal is reported to be absconding.
