Srinagar, Sept 14: With the elimination of Mohammad Yousuf Parray alias Kukka Parray within 17 days of killing of another top counter-insurgent Javaid Ahmad Shah, militants have succeeded in hitting at the backbone of anti-militancy operations which may be hampered.
The twin killings are believed to have sent shivers down the spines of other counter-insurgents -- past as well as present - as the striking prowess of militants has proved that their lives were at stake.
Officials here feel that the active counter-insurgents might contemplate withdrawal from anti-militancy operations in the wake of sustained militant attacks against them. Kukka Parray, known as father of counter-insurgency in Kashmir was killed by militants yesterday in his native village Hajan in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.
Parray along with shah broke the back of militancy, specially targetting pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen cadres and nearly succeeded in cleansing the areas around Hajin and Bandipore from the influence of the militants.
Operating from Hajan, the counter-insurgency operations run by the duo and aided by the security forces, spread its base across the valley. The counter-insurgents, known as Ikhwanis in common parlance became an effective weapon in tackling the militancy as they were well aware of the tactics and modus operandi of their former colleagues.
The Ikhwanis led by Parray, are credited with making the 1996 assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir possible as they kept in check the elements opposing them.
