Tiruchirapalli, Nov 08: The 'Maha Annabhisekam' of the early 11th century gigantic Shiv lingam at the historic temple of Gangai Konda Cholapuram, 125 Kms from here, was performed on the auspicious full moon day today. One hundred bags of cooked rice were showered on the huge lingam, 13.5 feet tall and sixty feet in perimeter. It is an annual feature on the poornima day in the Tamil month of aippasi.

The cooked rice smothered on the gigantic lingam was removed this evening and distributed to devotees as Maha Prasadam. Trucks, vans and carts were all chartered to mobilise the prasadam and they would be distributed to the villages in and around Gangai Konda Cholapuram. The left-over rice would be poured into ponds and tanks as thanksgiving to Lord Shiva and it is a generous feeding for fish and other aquatic creatures too. The main sponsors for the mega event included the Kanchi Mutt that supplied rice and the cooking utensils and manpower were provided by the Neyveli Lignite Corporation.

The temple was built by Rajendra Chola (1012 to 1044 ad).
