British Columbia premier visits Golden Temple
Amritsar, Nov 09: Premier of British Columbia Gordon Campbell visited the Golden Temple shrine and Jallianwala Bagh here during his brief visit to the border city today.
Amritsar, Nov 09: Premier of British Columbia Gordon Campbell visited the Golden Temple shrine and Jallianwala Bagh here during his brief visit to the border city today.
Secretary of Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandhak Committee (SGPC) Manjit Singh Calcutta, Minister of State Darbari Lal and Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former minister Ranjit Singh Brahampura received him at the shrine.
Calcutta and other SGPC officials took Campbell around the shrine, who was presented a memento, a set of religious books and a replica of the Golden Temple.
He also visited the Jallianwala Bagh and paid tributes to the martyrs. In his brief interaction with the media Campbell recalled the age-old ties between his country and India, especially the Sikhs, saying "they are major contributors to the development of our province. I trust the community".
Sikhs in Vancouver have special supporters in Canada and the people respect their contribution in the development of the province. "We hope the ties of friendship will continue", the premier said.
He said he had come here to share history and traditions and expressed the hope that the ties of friendship will be strengthened in various sectors, including business, culture and social development. Campbell's visit comes about a fortnight after Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chritien's visit to Amritsar and Chandigarh.
