Frankfurt, Nov 06: While his wife went to a hospital fearing she may be giving premature birth, Boris Becker says he went to a London bar and had a brief fling with a Russian-born model, only to be stunned months later when he learned the women was pregnant.
The three-time Wimbledon champion described the day of the encounter in his autobiography, Augenblick, verweile doch... ('Hold it, why don't you stay...'), excerpts of which began appearing in Germany's mass-circulation Bild newspaper yesterday.
Becker had just played his last Wimbledon match in June 1999 and decided to have a couple of beers with German tennis writers before joining his wife Barbara at their London hotel.
"I think I underestimated the effect of a couple of beers ... Otherwise I may have been more considerate when Barbara created a scene when I got back to the hotel," Becker wrote in the book. "Suddenly, she started getting contractions."
Becker's wife, who was seven months pregnant, was taken to a hospital by the wife of a friend, and Becker told Barbara he would rush to the hospital if things became "really serious."
