Ahmedabad, Aug 08: Leader of Opposition in Gujarat Vidhan Sabha Amarsinh Chaudhary and Gujarat PCC president Shankarsinh Vaghela were arrested for defying prohibitory orders after they tried to take out a rally in the city today.
"Both the former Chief Ministers Chaudhary and Vaghela were arrested after they tried to take out a rally from the state Congress office in Ellisbridge area," Joint Commissioner of Police (Sector 1) P C Thakur said today.
Former Deputy Chief Minister Narhari Amin and Congress MLA from Limbdi Bhawan Bharwad were also arrested with Vaghela and Chaudhary.
They were taken to police headquarters in the state capital Gandhinagar, he said. The Congress has given a call for "Gujarat bandh" to protest against the steep hike in agricultural power tariff, court fees and school and college fees.
Several farmers' and students' organisations have supported the bandh even as the ruling BJP has made a fervent appeal to the agriculturists to refrain from doing so.
Meanwhile, sporadic incidents of rail-roko and stone-pelting on state transport buses were reported during the bandh. A mob tried to stop the Mumbai-bound Gujarat Express at Maninagar railway station. Several persons were taken into preventive custody, police said.
