Brisbane, July 05: Bangladesh beat the Australian Cricket Academy by two wickets with six balls to spare today on the third and final day of a cricket tour match. Set 230 to win from a maximum of 73 overs, Bangladesh scraped home on the final day at Allan Border Field. Captain Khaled Mahmud clinched victory with an on-driven four after some nervous moments in the final session.
The tourists were 113 for four at tea with 35 overs remaining but lost wickets at regular intervals. Mohammad Ashraful (61) kept Bangladesh on pace with an attractive innings that included eight fours and two sixes, but he was dismissed with 96 still needed and 5 wickets left.
All-rounder Alok Kapali (44) and wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud (28) put on 43 for the sixth wicket with Kapali and Mahmud adding another 34 for the seventh. Medium pacer Peter Worthington (3-31 off 12 overs) gave the academy renewed hope when he dismissed Mashrafe Mortaza (1) with six needed, but Mahmud steered his side home.
Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore said his team's performance was an improvement on last week's 29-run loss to a Queensland Academy of Sport invitation team at the same ground.
"But there's still glaring areas to improve on," Whatmore said.
Whatmore said that his players need to concentrate on finishing off the job properly in their four-day game against a northern territory chief ministers team starting in Darwin on Thursday.
It is the team's final match before the first Test begins on July 18 against Australia in Darwin. Bureau Report
