The Gujarat government has suspended 27 employees, including 11 engineers, of the irrigation department for alleged financial irregularities in quake fund in Bachau, Rapar and other areas of Kutch district, according to irrigation minister Babubhai Bokharia. The suspension order, with immediate effect, was issued against the engineers and employees for misappropriation of the fund set up for removing debris in the aftermath of the devastating quake on January 26 last year, and for violation of tenders, Bokharia said in a statement.
The order has come in the wake of investigations by a two-member engineers' committee into the alleged irregularities, Bokharia said, adding that 50 employees were put under suspension in the past few months and departmental inquiries had also been ordered against some of the corrupt officials.
The suspended employees were-- an executive engineer, three deputy executive engineers, seven additional assistant engineers and 16 work assistants, he added.
