Shillong, Nov 26: A 14-year old girl from Meghalaya would receive the Jeevan Raksha Padak from the Prime Minister for saving the lives of seven family members from the clutches of dacoits, an official said here today. A class V student of Markasa Secondary School in Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills district, Skiewtidaris Lyngkhoi, saved the lives of her own sisters and younger brothers from the dacoits who killed her father and looted Rs one lakh.
Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills district, D K Dkhar said on January 13 this year, two masked dacoits entered Lyngkhoi's house in the evening and killed her father who was working in the kitchen and looted the money.
The miscreants then tried to enter the other room where Lyngkhoi and her mother, four sisters and two younger brothers were staying. The brave girl, risking her life, took a sickle and chopped off the fingers of the dacoits at the door and thereby forcing them to flee the place and saving the lives of her siblings, Dkhar said.
For her courageous deed, Lyngkhoi was selected for the 'Jeevan Raksha Padak', the DC said.
The girl would receive the award in Delhi on the eve of the next Republic Day.
