United States has identified more than 40 sites in Afghanistan where Osama bin Laden loyalists have been experimenting with chemical, biological or nuclear research. Announcing this, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Central Command Chief General Tommy Franks, who is in charge of the operations in Afghanistan, said it will take a long time to see whether these were really weapons or mass destruction or they were trying to make other things like fertilizers. Franks told a press conference that the command will make a report to the president only when he was sure about it. “We are very systematically going about visiting those.”
Franks also stressed that the forward operations base the Marines have established in southern Afghanistan will save a lot of flying time for the forces.
