Bangalore, Aug 12: As the spectre of drought haunts Karnataka for the third successive year, a central team will visit some affected areas later this month for an on-the-spot assessment, a top state official said today. The team, comprising about 10 members, would split into four teams and visit affected districts including Bellary, Bijapur, Haveri, Chitradurga, Davangere, Koppal, Gadag and Belgaum, State Development Commissioner Vijay Gore said.

Speaking to reporters, he said the team would arrive here on August 17 and was expected to leave here for Delhi on August 21 after its assessment for three or four days. Out of the total 175 taluks in Karnataka, 126 were drought-hit, 79 of them for the third consecutive year, he said.

Gore said The centre had assured that an additional one lakh tonnes of foodgrains would be provided for drought relief measures.

He said buffer stock of 1.5 lakh tonnes of foodgrains had been created in Bangalore and the state had requested the Centre to create such stocks in three more places along the national highway so that the foodgrains were readily available. He said the cloudseeding operations for artificial rains would be carried out for 90 days in different parts of the state from August 18, when the aircraft to be deployed for the purpose would arrive from the us.
