Kochi, July 06: India's satellite network was one of the largest domestic satellite communication system in the world and the country has been recognised as a global leader in remote sensing, ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan said today. "We have nearly 125 transponders including the one that we launched very recently, the INSAT-3. These transponders provide today a variety of services both through the government as well as through the private sector," he said at a function here.
The broadcasting capability for the INSAT was such that it has a reach of 90 per cent of the population covering almost 75 per cent of the geographic area of India, he said. Besides for own use, India has developed remote satellite system for many other countries, he said adding the remote satellite pictures were received by as many as 11 countries across the world.
Detailing the space programmes, he said, "In three decades we came from practically from nothing to a world class capability and today we are recognised as leaders in the remote sensing." Pointing out that the launch of IRS-1C and subsequently IRS-1D as a big breakthrough, he said the world had recognised India as the leader in the remote sensing satellite domain. Bureau Report
