Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 08: CPI-M led Left Democratic Front (LDF) today boycotted the post-Question Hour proceedings in Kerala Assembly protesting against the police lathicharge on pro-LDF students during a march here yesterday. Replying to an adjournment motion on the matter, Chief Minister A K Antony termed yesterday's students stir a "riot" and said police used tear gas, stern grenade and lathicharge only after their repeated pleas to the students to disperse peacefully failed.
Students also attacked the police with stones, petrol bombs and electric tube lights to provoke the police, he said, adding the opposition was using the student agitation, demanding laws to control self-financing professional colleges, as a political weapon to embarrass the government, he said.
Stating that the government agreed with the opposition on the students' demand, Antony said the former's stand was that in self-financing professional colleges, 50 per cent seats should be on merit quota and the right to fix fees for these seats vests with the government. However, two private colleges challenged the government policy and now the matter was before the supreme court, he said.
Antony said the government would take further action on the issue after the apex court pronounces its verdict "which was expected any time". Bureau Report
