Hoshiarpur, Nov 29: Three of the four named in the FIR in a murder case, in which a youth was allegedly hacked to pieces in broad daylight in Jahankhelan village on November 25 over his marriage to a Rajput girl, have been arrested, police said on Thursday. Jasbir Singh (22) and Geeta (20) had got married in a Chandigarh court about two months ago following opposition from the girl’s family to their marriage, sources said. Ever since, there had been considerable tension between the Rajputs and the Jats of the village, the sources added.

On November 25, the assailants chased Jasbir, shouting slogans and openly brandishing swords, and cut him into pieces in the presence of a large number of people in Jahankhelan, the sources said. The assailants later cut off one of Jasbir’s arms and took it out in a procession through the streets amidst frenzied yelling, the sources added. Subsequently, they threw the body parts in the house of his aunt, they said.

A case under Section 302 and Section 34 had been registered against Subhash Singh, Daljit Singh, Parbhat Singh and Naresh Kumar by the Sadar police. While Subhash, Daljit and Naresh have been arrested, the police are yet to arrest Parbhat.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Hoshiarpur, Lok Nath said that during preliminary interrogations, all three who have been arrested confessed to the crime. He added that the inter-caste marriage was the reason behind the crime. Earlier, Geeta expressed fears that the assailants might target her next as she was the lone eyewitness. She also alleged that they had threatened her on the phone.
