N Korea says it has nuclear weapons programme
Seoul, June 18: North Korea acknowledged today that it has a nuclear weapons programme and said it will never give it up without US concessions.
Seoul, June 18: North Korea acknowledged today that it has a nuclear weapons programme and said it will never give it up without US concessions.
"It is quite clear that the DPRK can never accept the
U.S. demand that it scrap its nuclear weapons programme first,"
said Pyongyang`s main state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun in a
commentary, using the acronym of the country`s official name,
Democratic People`s Republic of Korea.
Rodong`s commentary was carried by the North`s official KCNA news agency.
Rodong made the comment while criticizing the US insistence that North Korea join multilateral talks - involving China, Japan and South Korea - to settle the dispute over the communist state`s suspected development of nuclear weapons.
"The US insistence on `multilateral talks` is aimed to lay an international siege to the DPRK under the signboard of `dialogue` and stifle the DPRK by force," Rodong said.
North Korea said that the United States` "pressure on the DPRK to scrap its nuclear weapons program first is intended to contain it with ease after forcing it to disarm itself."
"The Iraqi war proved that disarmament leads to a war," it added.
North Korea has said it might consider U.S. demands for talks involving several nations, if it can meet one-on-one with the United States. Washington says talks should include Russia, China, South Korea and Japan.
