New Delhi, Oct 11: In a significant reform in property tax system in the Capital, Delhiites will be allowed to evaluate their assets by themselves from April 1 next year, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said here today. "After introduction of the unit area system, citizens will have the benefit of assessing their properties themselves and pay the property tax accordingly," she said addressing a seminar on 'people-oriented governance' here.

She said after self-assessment, the owners will be responsible for any irregularities.
The government also plans to construct housing units for jhuggi dwellers in an effort to make the capital cleaner, Dikshit said.

She said the jhuggi dwellers, mainly poor people from other states coming here for work, were at present paying between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,200 as rent per unit.
After constructing cooperative society houses for them, these will be offered to the jhuggi dwellers at the same monthly premiums and the flat would be their own after 20 years.
