Ranchi, July 22: The 48-hour Jharkhand bandh, called by naxalite outfit MCC to protest capital punishment to three of its activists for the massacre of 14 people, drew partial response on its first day today with minor incidents of violence reported in Ranchi and Hazaribagh. An officer of the crpf was injured in an encounter with ultras at Bundu in Ranchi district, the Inspector-General of Police (special branch) told news agencies. The extremists fled the scene after a sustained assault by the security forces.

Additional director-general of police J B Mohapatra said that a 10-metre railway track was destroyed by a blast at Thapar halt at Hendegiri in Hazaribag which followed a brief encounter between security forces and activists of the banned Maoist Communist Centre (MCC). However, there was no casualty.
Mohapatra said many trains had been diverted due to security reasons.

The bandh has been called to protest the capital punishment awarded to three MCC activists by Hazaribag Additional District and sessions judge, Ashok K Chand, on June 16, for the Beltu massacre in 2001 in which 14 people had died.
