The bandh, which was called by the student body to demand "autonomy" for the Sonowal Kachari community was peaceful, official sources said here.
Educational institutions, banks and markets remained closed while vehicular traffic was thin in most of the Upper Assam districts.

The police arrested more than 200 volunteers including some office bearers of the students union for picketing.
