At least 12 people engaged in illegal mining in abandoned coal mines of Baniadih Colliery of the CCL in Giridih district were on Wednesday feared killed when a wall of the mine caved in.
Confirming the incident, the CCL general manager, Jairam Sharma, said that the death figures were given by villagers while the company had so far received reports of only three deaths.

Deputy commissioner of Giridih K B P Sinha expressed his inability to give the exact number of people killed or trapped under the debris and said that a rescue operation had been launched to extricate the trapped persons.

The Deputy commissioner told reporters that the exact casualty figures could be available only after the debris was cleared. Police sources said that an FIR had been registered with the Mufassil police station regarding eight missing persons.
