New Delhi, May 02: Madhya Pradesh Governor and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Ram Prakash Gupta died after a protracted illness in the capital this morning. President A P J Abdul Kalam in his condolence message said, ''Mr Gupta had to his credit many years of public service, in various capacities, which included the post of chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.''

The Bharatiya Janata Party expressed shock over the death of Gupta and described it as a great loss for the party and the country.


Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, in his message, said, ''He was an able and dedicated lok sevak in different capacities, including that of the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh expressed profound grief over the death and said, ''Mr Gupta believed in simple living and high thinking and never compromised with his principles.''

Rajasthan Governor Madanlal Khurana and Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje also condoled the death of Gupta.


Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Justice O P Verma, Tamil Nadu Governor P S Ramamohan Rao, Gujarat Governor Kailashpati Mishra, Maharashtra Governor Mohammad Fazal and Goa Governor Kidar Nath Sahni also expressed their grief over the sudden demise of Gupta.
Gupta, who was suffering from pleurisy, passed away at AIIMS here.

The mortal remains of Gupta will be consigned to flames in Lucknow today afternoon.

Meanwhile, a week-long mourning will be observed in Madhya Pradesh following the demise.
