'Ghostbusters' controversy bummed me: Kristen Wiig

Los Angeles: Actress Kristen Wiig was disappointed with the negative attention the upcoming reboot of "Ghostbusters" received for having an all-female cast.

When the reboot was announced, the news became a source of controversy due to the lead cast, and 42-year-old Wiig, one of the four leading ladies of the film, addressed that backlash in a recent interview, reported Los Angeles Times.

When asked if Wiig ever worked on a film with so much attention and controversy, she responded, "No. And the fact there was so much controversy because we were women was surprising to me. Some people said some really not nice things about the fact that there were women. It didn't make me mad, it just really bummed me out. We're really honouring those movies."

Some of the comments were aimed at director Paul Feig, who earlier said, "I just don't understand why it's ever an issue anymore. I've promoted both 'Bridesmaids' and 'The Heat' and myself and my cast are still hit constantly with the question, 'Will this answer the question of whether women can be funny? I really cannot believe we're still having this conversation."

Wiig stars alongside Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones in the new reboot that takes place in a time separate from the original films.

Chris Hemsworth plays the male equivalent of Annie Potts' secretary Janine, while Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Dan Akyroyd, and Sigourney Weaver will all make cameos.
