Los Angeles: ‘Carol’, a 1950's lesbian romance starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, today emerged as the front-runner at the Golden Globe nominations with five nods including best drama, best director and best actress for both of its lead stars.

The nominations also saw "The Big Short", Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer "The Revenant" and Danny Boyle's "Steve Jobs" garner four nominations each.

Blanchett, already a double Oscar winner, is being considered an Academy award front-runner in the best actress category for her performance in the Todd Haynes-directed film, which is based on the best-selling novel "The Price of Salt".

The movie has been nominated in the best motion picture ? drama alongside "Mad Max: Fury Road", "The Revenant", "Spotlight" and "Room".

Nominees in the best actress - drama are Brie Larson (Room), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl).

In the best actor - drama category "The Revenant" star DiCaprio, who is yet to win an Oscar despite acclaimed roles, will fight it out with this year's Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne for his gender bending role in "The Danish Girl".

Michael Fassbender's turn as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is also a strong contender in this category and so is Bryan Cranston's performance in the role of a blacklisted Hollywood writer Dalton Trumbo in "Trumbo" and Will Smith for sports thriller "Concussion".

In the best motion picture - musical or comedy category, the nominees include "The Big Short", Matt Damon-starrer "The Martian", Jennifer Lawrence's "Joy", "Spy" and "Trainwreck".

Lawrence's turn as the Miracle Mop inventor in "Joy" will fight it out with McCarthy's "Spy", Amy Schumer for Trainwreck", Maggie Smith for "The Lady In The Van" and Lily Tomlin for "Grandma" in the best actress - musical or comedy list.

"The Big Short" co-stars Christian Bale and Steve Carell along with Damon (The Martian), Al Pacino (Danny Collins), Mark Ruffalo (Infinitely Polar Bear) are vying for a Golden Globe in the best actor - musical or comedy category.

The awards, to be hosted by Ricky Gervais, will be handed out on January 10 here.

In the best director category Ridley Scott (The Martian), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (The Revenant), Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight", Todd Haynes's "Carol" and George Miller for "Mad Max: Fury Road" have been nominated.

The nominees in the best supporting actress category are Jane Fonda ("Youth"), Jennifer Jason Leigh for "The Hateful Eight", Helen Mirren for "Trumbo", Alicia Vikander for "Ex Machina" and Kate Winslet for "Steve Jobs".

Paul Dano ("Love & Mercy"), Idris Elba ("Beasts of No Nation"), Mark Rylance ("Bridge of Spies"), Michael Shannon ("99 Homes") and Sylvester Stallone ("Creed") have bagged nods in the best supporting actor list.

The best screenplay nominations went to "Room", "Spotlight," "The Big Short," "Steve Jobs" and "The Hateful Eight."

Best animated feature nominations went to "Anomalisa," "The Good Dinosaur," "Inside Out," "The Peanuts Movie" and "Shaun the Sheep."

The nominees in the best original score are Carter Burwell for "Carol", Alexandre Desplat for "The Danish Girl", Ennio Morricone for "The Hateful Eight", Daniel Pemberton for "Steve Jobs", Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto for "The Revenant".

"Love Me Like You Do" (50 Shades of Grey), "One Kind of Love" (Love and Mercy), "See You Again" (Furious 7), "Simple Song #3" (Youth) and "Writing's on the Wall" (Spectre) are part of the best original song list.

In the best foreign film category Belgian drama "The Brand New Testament", "The Club" from Chile, Finland's "The Fencer", French movie "Mustang" and Hungarian project "Son Of Saul" are competing. (MORE) PTI

In the nominations for TV, "Empire", which centres on a

hip hop music and entertainment company, Empire Entertainment, has bagged two nominations-- the best television drama series and for its lead actress Taraji P Henson in the best performance by an actress in a television series ? drama.

Viola Davis is nominated in the best performance by an actress in a television series ? drama category for her work in "How to Get Away with Murder".

Nominees for the best actress in a TV series- drama also include Caitriona Balfe ('Outlander'), Eva Green ('Penny Dreadful') and Robin Wright ('House of Cards').

Nominees for best actor in a TV Series- drama are Jon Hamm ('Mad Men'), Rami Malek ('Mr Robot'), Wagner Moura ('Narcos'), Bob Odenkirk ('Better Call Saul'), Liev Schreiber ('Ray Donovan')

"Game of Thrones", a top winner at this year's Emmys, received only one nomination-- the best television drama series.

Also nominated in the best television drama series are "Mr Robot", "Narcos" and "Outlander".

"Veep" earned nomination in the best television series? musical or comedy, and the best actress category for Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Best actor in a TV series- comedy nods are Indian-American Aziz Ansari ('Master of None'), Gael Garcia Bernal ('Mozart in the Jungle'), Rob Lowe ('The Grinder'), Patrick Stewart ('Blunt Talk') and Jeffrey Tambor ('Transparent').

Besides "Veep", others nominated in the best TV series- comedy are "Casual", "Mozart in the Jungle", "Orange Is the New Black", "Silicon Valley" and "Transparent".

The best actress in a TV series- comedy contenders are Rachel Bloom, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Rodriguez, Lilly Tomlin, Grace & Frankie, besides Louis-Dreyfus.

The nominees for TV movie or limited series are "American Crime," "American Horror Story: Hotel," "Fargo," "Flesh and Bone," and "Wolf Hall."

Pop star Lady Gaga received a nod in the best actress in a limited series or motion picture made for television for "American Horror Story: Hotel".
